Pisa

About the city

The city of Pisa once rivalled Genoa and Venice as a maritime power, emulated Padua and Perugia as a university town, and developed a distinctive style of Romanesque architecture. Today, the city draws its fame from an architectural project gone terribly wrong and relies on the tide of tourists who flow into the city every day. The most important monuments are concentrated in the piazza del Duomo. The baptistery, cathedral, Leaning Tower, and Camposanto shine like carved ivory, rising out of a broad expanse of emerald green grass. The duomo contains Giovanni Pisano’s masterful pulpit, with its violently dramatic Gothic reliefs. You can make your unbalanced way to the top of the Torre Pendente, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, from which local boy Galileo Galilei dropped a variety of objects in his attempt to understand gravity. Education has fuelled the local economy since the 1400s, and students from across Italy still compete for places in its elite university and research schools and help keep a vibrant and affordable cafe and bar scene. This metropolis of a hundred thousand inhabitants is much more than a tower, is a city full of art and history.

Cinque Terre

About the city

The Cinque Terre (Italian pronunciation: [ˈtʃiŋkwe ˈtɛrre]; Ligurian: Çinque Tære, meaning "Five Lands") is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia, and comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination. The villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive

day 2 - Default - Default

Admiring the sunset on board the boat captained by Alessandro and his American wife, Brenda, is a truly romantic experience that you won't soon forget. This spectacular evening cruise in the Cinque Terre gives you the chance to admire the coastline at the magical sunset hour from the deck of a gozzo, a traditional, wooden Ligurian fishing boat.

Your tour will start from Monterosso al Mare and include a minimum of two hours of cruising. You'll have the opportunity to experience the picturesque Italian Riviera as the sunset glows on the multi-colored houses in the villages, and to see the breathtaking, rocky coastline of the Cinque Terre as it's bathed in red, orange and pink tones. You'll cruise out to sea to get a better view of the sunset and, with luck, a group of friendly dolphins might join the route of the boat!

This magical experience will be accompanied by an array of snacks on board: focaccia, salami, pistachios, olives, Parmesan cheese, washed down with plenty of Prosecco and other cold beverages. During the cruise, a stop will be made to enjoy Ligurian-style tapas in a local restaurant. This small group tour is a unique option for birthdays, honeymoons and other special occasions, and will create memories to last a lifetime.

day 3 - Default - Default

Discover the beautiful Cinque Terre, a picture perfect landscape of interconnecting villages that cling to steep cliffs above the Ligurian sea.

Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola - each with its own distinct character, set high above the rocky cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea - these five picturesque villages comprise the celebrated Cinque Terre. Excursion starts from the Santa Margherita Ligure train station where you will meet your guide. The first stop on the tour is Corniglia, the only one of the five that is not on the sea. From this secluded little village, you will hike through the famed terraced vineyards and pine forests all the way to Volastra, and then descend to the seaside town of Manarola.

Following a break for lunch, you'll board the public boat to Vernazza and have a one-hour guided visit of this picturesque town. Another boat ride follows, giving you a chance to admire and photograph the rocky, Ligurian coastline from the sea. Disembarking at Monterosso, largest of the Cinque Terre, a leisurely stroll along the seaside promenade leads to the station where a direct Intercity train will take you back to your starting point.

Florence

About the city

Florence is as vital and beautiful today as when its wool and silk merchants and bankers revolutionized the economy of 13th century Tuscany, and the art of Dante and Michelangelo stunned the world. Florence was the centre of the Italian Renaissance. The fruits of the city’s rebirth are still evident in its seemingly endless array of museums, churches and palazzi. With its historic centre classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Duomo, the elegant and beautiful cathedral, dominates the city and is an unmistakable reference point in your wanderings. The River Arno, which cuts through the oldest part of the city, is crowned with the Ponte Vecchio bridge lined with shops and held up by stilts. Dating back to the 14th century, it is the only bridge that survived attacks during WWII. Standing by the river at night, when the city is illuminated with a myriad twinkling lights, is unforgettable. But more remains of Florence’s incomparable heritage than stones and paint, the city’s indomitable spirit has also survived the centuries, ensuring Florentine life today its liveliness and sophistication.
