Discovering Siena's Masterpieces

day 4 - Default - Default

Understand the cultural and historical events that shaped the magnificent city of Siena in this half-day, private walking tour.

Ideal as an introduction to the splendors of Siena, this half-day private walking tour is perfect for those who want a basic understanding of the culture and historical events that shaped this magnificent city. Siena is so lovely and well preserved that UNESCO has declared its medieval city-center a World Heritage Site. The tour begins in front of the Basilica of San Domenico, where you will learn about Saint Catherine of Siena's mystic life (as well as see holy relics consisting of the Saint's head and thumb); from here you will explore many picturesque corners of the historic center.

Marvel at the spectacular zebra-striped Gothic cathedral and baptistery, both of which beautifully symbolize the devout religious nature of the Sienese. Inside the Duomo you can find some of the city's most cherished artworks: statues by masters like Donatello, Michelangelo and Gianlorenzo Bernini, and colorful scenes from the life of a Renaissance pope frescoed on the walls of the Piccolomini Library.

Next comes the city's secular heart, Piazza del Campo, where the thrilling horserace known as the Paliois run twice each summer. An understanding of Siena's 17 contrade (city wards dating back to medieval times) helps you to appreciate the pride and rivalry of each group during the Palio.

Looming over Piazza del Campo is Palazzo Pubblico (City Hall), a crenellated, Gothic building that represents the independence and economic might of the Sienese oligarchy. The knowledge you gain from this tour will follow you as you explore the rest of the city.

Please note that entrance tickets are NOT included in the total price and must be paid in cash on site.

Half-Day Walking Tour of historic Cortona

day 8 - Default - Default

A half-day private tour of picturesque Cortona, the medieval town perched on a hilltop in Tuscany's Val di Chiana, made famous by several movies.

Nowadays, Cortona is well known for being the backdrop of the movies "Life is Beautiful" by Roberto Benigni and of Frances Mayes' book "Under the Tuscan Sun." Its fascinating appearance is due to the fact that it was a powerful enclave in the Middle Ages, with a commanding position overlooking the Val di Chiana.

This tour starts in the Neo-Gothic Basilica of Santa Margherita, built in honor of the patron of the falsely accused. A beautiful, solid silver urn designed by Pietro da Cortona in the 17th century contains the saint's body, while the piazza in front of the church boasts a spectacular view of the valley towards Monte Amiata and Lake Trasimeno. This is the highest point of the city, where the fortress also stands, and from here you will descend along small and at times steep medieval alleys to the church of Saint Francis of Assisi, the second church built in his honor, after the one in his hometown.

Continuing on to the heart of Cortona, you will visit the impressive Duomo. Passing by City Hall, you'll walk among the various little artisan shops on the so-called Ruga Piana, the only level street in the entire town. The tour concludes at DelBrenna goldsmith's shop where you will enjoy a glass of sparkling Prosecco, served in a silver and gold plated chalice.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

PLEASE NOTE: Due to conflicting schedules with Sunday Mass, Select Italy does not recommend this tour on Sunday morning, as churches will only be visible from the outside.

All streets in Cortona, with the exception of the Ruga Piana, are on a slope so comfortable shoes are highly recommended.

Please note that transportation to/from the meeting point is NOT included in the total price. Select Italy will be happy to arrange a private transfer for a supplemental fee.

Sites Included: Basilica of Santa Margherita, Piazza Garibaldi, church of Saint Francis of Assisi, Duomo, Ruga Piana, DelBrenna goldsmith's shop
