Exclusive Early Access to the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums

day 2 - Default - Default

Explore the incomparable Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica one hour before the public opening to see these timeless masterpieces before the galleries become crowded with thousands of visitors, estimated at 25,000 every day!

This small group tour starts with a short introduction to the Vatican Museums, after which you will briskly proceed through the corridors to be one of the first inside the Sistine Chapel. One of the most famous painted interior spaces in the world, the chapel's decoration was started in 1481 by Renaissance masters, including Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio and Luca Signorelli. Michelangelo began the ceiling in 1508 and spent four years here under difficult conditions, from extreme temperatures to weeks of contorted painting positions. Two of the most moving scenes are the Creation of Adam and the Expulsion from the Garden.

Continue your group tour through the Vatican Museums where your guide will introduce you to its impressive art collections. Admire the spectacular Gallery of the Candelabra, the dazzling optical illusions inside the Gallery of the Tapestries and the detailed maps of Italy frescoed on the walls of the Gallery of Maps. Not to be missed are the Raphael Rooms, regarded by critics as one of the greatest Renaissance painting cycles ever done.

The tour will end in St. Peter's Basilica. Here you will find Michelangelo's exquisite marble statue of the "Pieta'," right next to the tomb of Pope John Paul II, who died in 2005 and was made a saint in 2014.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Participants of this tour are both Select Italy and non-Select Italy clients; maximum number of participants is 13.

Please note that transportation to/from the meeting point is NOT included in the total price. Select Italy will be happy to arrange a private transfer for a supplemental fee.

Florence

About the city

Florence is as vital and beautiful today as when its wool and silk merchants and bankers revolutionized the economy of 13th century Tuscany, and the art of Dante and Michelangelo stunned the world. Florence was the centre of the Italian Renaissance. The fruits of the city’s rebirth are still evident in its seemingly endless array of museums, churches and palazzi. With its historic centre classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Duomo, the elegant and beautiful cathedral, dominates the city and is an unmistakable reference point in your wanderings. The River Arno, which cuts through the oldest part of the city, is crowned with the Ponte Vecchio bridge lined with shops and held up by stilts. Dating back to the 14th century, it is the only bridge that survived attacks during WWII. Standing by the river at night, when the city is illuminated with a myriad twinkling lights, is unforgettable. But more remains of Florence’s incomparable heritage than stones and paint, the city’s indomitable spirit has also survived the centuries, ensuring Florentine life today its liveliness and sophistication.

Skip the line guided tour of the Uffizi Gallery

day 3 - Skip the line guided tour of the Uffizi Gallery

You can't leave Florence without visiting one of the most famous art galleries in the world. Here you can admire numerous works of art by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello, Giotto, Cimabue, Masaccio and many others. Among the precious exhibition halls of the Gallery, the most renowned one contains the refined works by Botticelli, amongst which the absolute masterpieces: "Primavera" and "Birth of Venus". These guided tours will let you admire the most important museum of Florence: the Uffizi Gallery. The Museum is in the top floor of the building realized by Giorgio Vasari to house the administrative offices of the Tuscan State. The foundation of the Gallery has been desired by the Grand-duke Francesco I, during the years the collection has been enriched by the members of the Medici family, who were great lovers of paintings, sculpture and works of art.

Tuscany

About the city

Tuscany is located in central Italy and stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its landscape, artistic heritage and stand-out cities - first among them Florence - make Tuscany an unquestioned protagonist of international tourism. In this region, nature has many different facets, starting from the coast that alternates long and sandy beaches, like the Versilia beach, with rocky cliffs and steep headlands. The islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, a crystal-clear sea and rich seabeds, are peerless. You can admire sceneries of uncontaminated nature in the Apuan Alps and in several protected areas, such as the Orbetello Lagoon, home to many species of migrant birds, including pink egrets. However, the most typical sceneries of the region are those that merge the beauty of nature with the millenary work of man. The amazing Gulf of Baratti and the sites of Vetulonia, Vulci and Pitigliano guard necropoli and vestiges of the Etruscan civilization, while Roselle and Cosa evoke memories from the Roman Age. Medieval villages, historical towns, castles and defense systems, country churches (the so-called pievi) and beautiful abbeys, like the one of Sant'Antimo, are scattered all over the territory and their profiles stand out in the landscapes of the Crete Senesi, Orcia Valley, Garfagnana, Chianti and the Maremma. Finally, Tuscany is full of spas: Montecatini, Saturnia, Montepulciano, Monsummano and Bagno Vignoni, which offer relaxing holidays thanks to their thermal waters and well-equipped facilities for all types of treatments. The provinces of the region are: Florence (regional capital), Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
