About the city

Perhaps no city is as fabulous as Venice, a metropolis built upon pilings, a labyrinth poised over a lagoon. Venice has been called the drawing room of Europe, and indeed for centuries the city was a sanctuary for ideas and idealists, a crossroad of the Byzantine and Roman worlds. Today Venice is a different kind of drawing room. Wealthy visitors clamber into gondolas to gawk at the Byzantine palaces while being serenaded by accordionists and art appreciators stand on tiptoe for a glimpse of Renaissance masterpieces. No monument is as memorable as the city itself, so use the major sights only as an excuse for wandering. Venice revolves around piazza San Marco. The best feature of the mosaic-covered Basilica di San Marco is the Pala D’Oro, a glittering gold Byzantine bas-relief. The Torre dell’Orologio, left of San Marco, is a beautifully embellished clock tower. For culture vultures check the Accademia for the best of Venetian paintings. Some say that the tourist Venice is indeed Venice, but there are other Venices as well. To find them, wander away from the major sights and into the quieter outlying residential neighbourhoods, you won’t be disappointed, this maze of stone and colour exudes enchantment from every brick.

About the city

Florence is as vital and beautiful today as when its wool and silk merchants and bankers revolutionized the economy of 13th century Tuscany, and the art of Dante and Michelangelo stunned the world. Florence was the centre of the Italian Renaissance. The fruits of the city’s rebirth are still evident in its seemingly endless array of museums, churches and palazzi. With its historic centre classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Duomo, the elegant and beautiful cathedral, dominates the city and is an unmistakable reference point in your wanderings. The River Arno, which cuts through the oldest part of the city, is crowned with the Ponte Vecchio bridge lined with shops and held up by stilts. Dating back to the 14th century, it is the only bridge that survived attacks during WWII. Standing by the river at night, when the city is illuminated with a myriad twinkling lights, is unforgettable. But more remains of Florence’s incomparable heritage than stones and paint, the city’s indomitable spirit has also survived the centuries, ensuring Florentine life today its liveliness and sophistication.

Florence Walking Tour

day 5 - Tour in Eng,Fre,Spa,Ita or Ger
Meet your guide near Piazza della Stazione in central Florence, and then set off on your 2.5-hour walking tour of the town. Head through the San Lorenzo neighborhood, an area known for its colorful markets and artist workshops. As you walk, listen to snippets of history and stories about the Tuscan capital.
Florence’s heyday is widely recognized as the Renaissance era when the notorious Medici dynasty ruled the roost. Being lovers of fine art as well as powerful and prosperous people, the Medici family nurtured some of the most eminent Italian artists, who left their artistic legacy firmly stamped on the city.
Wander past the Medici Chapels that were designed by Renaissance artists Michelangelo and Matteo Nigetti, and then gaze in admiration at the colossal Basilica of San Lorenzo, where prominent members of the Medici family are buried.
Continue to Florence Duomo, topped by the distinctive Brunelleschi's Dome. Learn about the cathedral while you walk around it, then visit Giotto’s Bell Tower and see Florence Baptistry.
Stroll through the city’s medieval center to Palazzo del Bargello, an imposing-looking art gallery that once was a prison, and then explore Piazza della Signoria – Florence’s busy central square. Admire the array of sculptures strewn about the piazza, such as the Rape of the Sabine Women by Giambologna, an impressive statue outside the Uffizi Gallery.
Pass Palazzo Vecchio, the city hall, and continue past the New Market (Mercato Nuovo) to see Il Porcellino, the city’s much-loved bronze piglet statue. Stop to rub the statue’s nose for luck, and then wander back toward the river, cross the magnificent Ponte Vecchio, and finish your tour by Pitti Palace.

Catania, Sicily

About the city

Catania is the second largest city in Sicily. Buried seven times by fierce eruptions of the Etna volcano and several earthquakes, much of its monuments have been destroyed. Nonetheless, the old town is well maintained, so much so, that it was declared a World Heritage Site in 2002. In the city center visitors will be able to enjoy the major feature of the city: its baroque architecture. The main examples are the Cathedral Square, Piazza del Duomo ,with the Elephant Fountain, the adorned Cathedral, founded in the 11th century on the ruins of the ancient baths and the impressive 13th century Ursino Castle. The remains of the Roman and Greek heritage can still be witnessed at the former Acropolis of Katane that includes the Roman Theatre, built by Greeks and reconstructed by Romans, the Odeon and the Amphitheatre. Chaotic, noisy and boisterous, Catania’s nightlife is buzzing, hundreds of bars, clubs and eateries are at hand where to get infected with the joie de vivre of the city’s population.
